BioBattlers began during a period of big change in my life.
Within a few months I lost one of my best friends, I became a father, bought a home, and found myself thinking more carefully about the kind of world my son would grow up in, and the role technology would play in it.
Like most people, I love what technology can do. But I also noticed how easily it pulls us indoors, away from the living world that exists right outside. Insects, plants, and wildlife are everywhere, yet often unseen or misunderstood. At the same time, biodiversity is declining at an alarming rate, and many people are becoming increasingly disconnected from nature.
BioBattlers grew out of that tension.
I didn’t want to create another app that simply demands attention. I wanted to build something that rewards curiosity, encourages observation, and nudges people back outside, even if just into a garden, park, or hedgerow.
Games have always been powerful teachers. They motivate, challenge, and reward discovery. BioBattlers uses that power to turn real world exploration into play. By scanning real insects and revealing their BioBattler forms, the natural world becomes something to notice, learn from, and engage with. Not just a green blur to scroll past and ignore.
From the very beginning, BioBattlers was built with clear boundaries.
There are no adverts.
No dark patterns.
No unnecessary data harvesting.
I wanted this to be something I would feel comfortable handing to my own child: a game that respects players and their privacy, and treats learning as something exciting rather than obligatory.
Today, BioBattlers is live on the App Store worldwide 🌍 as a small but growing project. It is intentionally simple in its current form, designed to evolve carefully over time rather than rush toward scale. New ideas, features, and directions are being explored, but always with the same core principles in mind.
My hope is that BioBattlers continues to grow as a bridge between technology and the living world, leading the way in technology nature gamification. Hopefully helping people rediscover the extraordinary things that exist all around them, and creating a sense of respect and curiosity for nature in an age that desperately needs it.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for being curious about the world around you.
